Orthotics are prescription made inserts for shoes, as you wear them they gently hold your feet in their proper position. They change the way the foot functions to treat or prevent pain in the feet, legs, hips and back. Athletes often use orthotic devices as 'performance enhancers'. The foot needs to function at its best for optimal performance. Orthotics can vary from accommodative cushioning insoles to high technology, lightweight, carbon fiber molded shells. Your podiatrist will recommend the best device for your situation. Orthotics are generally made from a plaster mould taken from your feet. This mould is 'corrected' and an orthotic device is hand crafted to hold your feet and legs in the corrected position. There are different styles made to fit comfortably into your shoes whether you wear joggers, fashion shoes or even sandals.
